SmartKids NY introduces 3rd graders to new technologies through hands-on demos and experiments led by young entrepreneurs, researchers and professionals. The intent of the program is three-fold:
1) Introduce elementary students to technology and innovation primarily through entrepreneurship;
2) Leverage the cutting-edge ideas and research in New York's incubators, start-ups and universities to expand K-20 STEM initiatives; and
3) Demonstrate that math and science can lead to “cool” careers.
In its third year, SmartKids is working with third grade classrooms in Averill Park, Bethlehem, Schodack and Troy school districts. This expanded pilot is made possible with seed money from Questar III BOCES.
Past and current participants include: Abbott Energy, Besstech, Century Solar, Ecovative Design, GE through Women of Wind Energy, MICROrganic Technologies, Mosaic Associates, RPI Department of Science and Technology Studies, Tumalow Energy, UAlbany College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, and Vital Vio.
